What is a Literature Review?

A Literature Review is a summary and evaluation of related published research about a particular topic.   You will find the research literature in peer-reviewed, scholarly journals.  Before you search:

  • Create a manageable focus.
  • Use the library's Electronic Databases in the specific subject area of your research.
  • Choose articles that are relevant to your topic.

Introduction and Body of Literature Review

Include an introduction to explain how the research is organized.

  • Who are the authors conducting the research?
  • What is the purpose of the research?
  • Who were the participants in the research?
  • What were the methods and procedures used?
  • Where was the research conducted?

Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the research.

Conclusion

What have you learned from reading the article?

What were the results?

Do you agree with the findings?  Why or why not?

What questions do you have as a result of reading the research?
