The Assignment

Essay Two Assignment

Please choose one of the prompts below to write an essay between four and five pages in length (not including your Works Cited page).

For this essay, I would like for you to use the stories as primary source material, but also find at least three articles in the NLC library databases to use as secondary evidence to support your analysis.  You will integrate quotations from these sources in the body paragraphs of your essay alongside quotations from the stories themselves.

1.  Describe the importance of the phrase "everyday use" (paragraph 66). How does this phrase highlight the conflicting values in Alice Walker's "Everyday Use"?  Contrast Dee's attitude toward her heritage with the attitudes of her mother and sister.  How much truth is there in Dee's accusation that her mother and her sister don't understand their heritage?

2.  Choose two of the stories below and analyze how point of view contributes to the overall meaning of the story:

  • "A Rose for Emily"
  • "To Build a Fire"
  • "The Rocking Horse Winner"
  • "The Things They Carried" (if you are writing about this work, be sure your article refers to the short story OR the opening chapter of his novel, also called The things They Carried).

3.  What do Wilifred Owen's "Anthem for Doomed Youth" and "Dulce et Decorum Est" reveal about the changing social conditions of WWWI England?

4.  Compare and contract the families presented in three of the following works:

  • "The Rocking Horse Winner"
  • "A Rose for Emily"
  • "Everyday Use"
  • "My Papa's Waltz" (be sure to insert / between lines of poetry)

This essay will be due on Monday, 9 April at the beginning of class int he blue folder I have provided.  Be sure to submit an electronic copy to turnitin.com as well.
