Essay Four Handout

In this essay, you will be composing an argument on a particular issue. The final draft of your essay should be at least four pages long. Your essay will also require a Works Cited page.

First, I would like for you to choose a topic from the options below. The following topics are taken from CQ Researcher, an electronic database in the library.

School Reform April 29, 2011 • Volume 21, Issue 17 Should evaluations of teachers rest on students’ test scores?

Gulf Coast Restoration August 26, 2011 • Volume 21, Issue 29 Can the damaged region rebound?

Organ Donations April 15, 2011 • Volume 21, Issue 15 Can the growing demand for organs be met?

Legal-Aid Crisis October 7, 2011 • Volume 21, Issue 35 Do the poor have adequate access to legal services?

Caring for Veterans April 23, 2010 • Volume 20, Issue 16 Does the VA adequately serve wounded vets?

Professional Football January 29, 2010 • Volume 20, Issue 4 Is the NFL doing enough to protect players?

Food Safety  December 17, 2010 • Volume 20, Issue 44 Would new legislation make the food supply safer?

Read the opening paragraphs of each report to see which interests you the most.

After you have chosen your topic, follow the Guide to Writing Arguments in Chapter 9, beginning with “Generating Ideas and Text” on page 101 in order to complete your draft.

Your final product should use the CQ Researcher article as one source and incorporate at least two additional sources from the library databases (other than CQ Researcher).
