Welcome to ENGL 1302

Welcome to the class guide for ENGL 1302.  Please use the tabs above to find information for research or personal interest.

Your Assignment

Preliminary Bibliography

The topics can cover any of the short stories discussed or mentioned in class  (Chopin:  “The Story of an Hour,” “The Storm,” “The Awakening,” “Desiree’s Baby”; Tobias Wolff: “The Rich Brother”; Shirley Jackson: “The Lottery”; Susan Glaspell: Trifles; Henrik Ibsen: A Doll’s House—to name a few).

Objectives: By the time you complete Task 2 of the research process, you will be able to do the following:

1. Search at least two literary data bases to become familiar with how to find sources,

2. Find a variety of sources pertaining to your research topic and research question(s),

3. Skim through the sources to get a general impression whether each sources will be pertinent to your research topic and question(s),

4. Find ten varied sources, and

5. Compile the sources into a Preliminary Bibliography.

Directions: Now that you have submitted your research proposal, go to the library and begin looking for potential sources that may help you to answer your research question or questions. Take the time to skim through the sources to get a “feel” for their potential or relevance. Afterwards, write a preliminary bibliography. Your final draft of the bibliography must exemplify the subsequent traits:

1. Must have the header information (full name, teacher’s name, etc.)

2. Must contain the title Preliminary Bibliography (centered on the page)and must be alphabetized,

3. Must be double spaced,

4. Must contain 10 varied (printed books, journals, electronic books, literary websites, etc.), trustworthy, relevant, secondary sources,

5. All lines except the first line of each full citation must be indented (On page 317 in The Curious Researcher: A Guide to Writing Research Papers, look at the Works Cited; your bibliography will be organized the same way; the only structural difference is that you will use the words
