Research Assignment: 1301 – Paper 3 Assignment Sheet Definitional Argument

In essay three the organization of the paper is more important than usual. You are to use Chapter 8 extensively for this assignment. You must take a controversial issue and make an assertion based on the definition of the words that you use. Ex. Spanking is child abuse. This may be a simple sentence but only if you carefully define spanking, child, and abuse. If you get confused think of this paper as a series of if/then statements. If spanking means one thing then it does not mean another. Spanking is with an open hand but not a closed fist, etc. You will pick a topic and take a side. Use a dictionary to help define your terms, but ultimately the definitions are up to you. Next, you must set up three to five criteria to support your definition. Examples: Gay marriage is/is not acceptable. Golf is/is not a sport. The Patriot Act is/is not a violation of civil liberties. Euthanasia is/is not immoral. Burning music from the internet is/is not stealing.

The paper must be a minimum of three pages long. I want you to use two sources in this paper so use internal documentation and provide a works cited page. Lastly, make sure that you turn it in to turnitin.com before the final paper is due.
