Citation Tip

Avoid using quotes "cited in" other works.

If you do use a "cited in" quote, adjust the words outside the parentheses to indicate who is being quoted.

  • As Johnson notes... (Webber, 1992)
  • Do not use (Johnson, cited in Webber, 1992)

About APA Style

APA Style is the official guidelines adopted by the American Psychological Association.  It is most commonly used for formatting manuscripts and citing materials in the sciences.

Ask for this book at the Reference Desk.  Available for in-library use only.

What is a Digital Object Identifier (DOI)?

The DOI is a permanent identifier, mainly used for electronic documents.  The International DOI Foundation (IDF) defines DOI as “a digital identifier for any object of intellectual property."  It is like an ISBN for digital documents.

The DOI permanent identifier is a number or a combination of numbers and letters.  It links the user back to the original publication (the article in the original journal or e-book).  Here are two examples:

         10.1080/08832320903217606
         10.3748/wjg.v16.i20.2484

How do I use a DOI?

DOIs are not like URLs.  You cannot put the DOI in a search engine and expect to find the article.

Instead, go to the DOI resolver site and paste it in the search box to locate your document.   Click on this picture to go to the site:
